(Okoboji)– Local zoning officials are expressing concern over a bill that would prevent them from prohibiting accessory dwelling units, or ADU’s. Most cities in the Iowa Great Lakes don’t allow them. City Administrator Michael Meyers says that’s been the case in Okoboji 50 years now…
He notes two other specific concerns…
Meyers says while the city could still require low impact development plans, it would make it nearly impossible to enforce them.
Proponents of the bill say it would help address a housing shortage in Iowa. Groups advocating for senior citizens also supported the measure, saying it would allow older Iowans to be near their children.
The bill has passed both the House and Senate and is now headed to the Governor’s desk. She’s expected to sign it into law.
