(Des Moines)– Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has won the Iowa caucuses, edging out former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum by a mere eight votes.

Iowa Republican party chairman Matt Strawn announced the razor-thin margin early this (Wednesday) morning from Des Moines. Strawn says Romney got 30,015 votes, while Santorum received 30,007 votes.

Here’s a breakdown of results from northwest Iowa: Dickinson and Plymouth counties were the only northwest Iowa counties that carried Mitt Romney. Rick Santorum garnered support from Lyon, Sioux, Osceola, O’Brien, Cherokee, Clay, Pocahontas, Palo Alto, Emmet and Kossuth counties. Ron Paul was the winner in Buena Vista county.

The totals for Dickinson county had Romney with 187 votes; Santorum with 150; followed by Newt Gingrich with 132 votes; Ron Paul with 100; Rick Perry 98; Michelle Bachman with 18 and Jon Huntsman with 4.

In Clay county the top three finishers were Santorum with 165; Paul with 150 and Romney with 149.

The top three finishers in Emmet county were Santorum with 65; Bachman with 47 and Perry with 43.

In Osceola county, the top three were Santorum with 81; Paul with 78 and Romney with 48.

And in O’Brien county, the top three were Santorum with 265; Paul with 105 and Perry with 73.
