Area Food Pantries Experiencing More Challenges

April 15, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The demand at Dickinson county’s food pantries continues to grow, and no change in that trajectory is expected any time soon. Kim Wermersen represents the Board of Supervisors on the Dickinson County Hunger Coalition. He reported at today’s (Tues.) supervisor’s meeting they’re seeing some additional challenges as well…

“And we received word that both federal and state funding is going to be down. And so our coalition is taking a look at ways we can supplement protein, meat, of some sort, or protein, and other things that can help supplement those meals because we have a lot of folks in Dickinson county that have food insecurity, so.”

Wermersen adds the Dickinson county food pantries are seeing an increase in the number of people utilizing them who are from outside the county. He says they’re looking into that. He says the pantries are also becoming more and more reliant on local donations.
