Additional Details Released Into Incident South Of Spencer Earlier Today (Sunday) On Hwy 71

March 23, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Clay county authorities have released additional details into an incident this (Sunday) morning south of Spencer on Highway 71 that resulted in some evacuations and the closure of the highway.

The Sheriff’s Office says they received a call a little at 7:39 am from the driver of a semi reporting that his trailer had become unhooked from his tractor as he was turning southbound onto Highway 71 from 400th Street. The trailer was loaded with anhydrous ammonia but was not leaking. Surrounding homes in that area were still evacuated, however, as a precaution.

A towing company and crane service arrived on the scene to upright the semi. The Royal Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol and Spencer Ambulance assisted on the scene. The highway was reopened around 10:17 am and those who had been evacuated previously were allowed to return to their homes. No injuries were reported.
