MAVERICKS OUTDUEL REBELS IN WELLS

The third-ranked Martin County West softball team outdueled top-ranked United South Central in Wells on Monday.
The Mavericks pulled the 1-0 upset over the Rebels at Thompson Park.
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the top of the sixth inning when Maddie Carlson scored from second base on a passed ball that was thrown into left field and that made the difference.
Carlson tossed 13 strikeouts and allowed only three hits and three walks in her ninth shutout performance of the season.
The Rebels loaded the bases in the bottom of third for their best threat. Emily Schettler retrieved a pitch in the dirt and flipped it to Carlson covering home to keep USC off the scoreboard.
Addy Wohlhuter helped energize the offense with her triple in the fifth inning.
Courtney Anderson had the only other hit and one walk for MCW against All-State Rebels ace Mariah Anderson who collected 16 strikeouts on the day. Rowan Faber also walked aboard to lead off the game. USC committed three errors while MCW had just one.
The 18-1 Mavericks extended their active winning streak to 10 games with a trip to Sleepy Eye up next. The 14-5 Indians are seeking their fifth straight win on Tuesday. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
