The Martin County West softball team needs just one more win to advance to the State Tournament for the first time ever.
The Martin County West Mavericks lived up to their #1 Class A ranking by picking up two wins on Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. It took extra innings in the first game against Cleveland, but the Mavericks got the walk off win in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI single from Bailey Larson that scored Lillie Schultz from third. Cleveland was the only team to hand the Mavericks a loss during the regular season. Larson and Courtney Anderson both went 2 for 4 with a RBI. Emily Schettler was 2 for 2 with a RBI while Lillie Schultz was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Carlson went the distance on the mound for MCW. She gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Brooke Bosse, Anistyn Dauk and Keira Schipper were the only Clippers to get a hit. Delaney Thompson gave up 3 runs on 8 hits with 3 of them being earned. She took the loss for the Clippers.
The Mavericks then moved on into the semi-final game against Nicollet who upset New Ulm Cathedral 4 to 3 in their first game of the day. Carlson would strikeout 12 Raiders. She gave up one run on 6 hits and only walked 2. Anderson led the Mavericks at the plate going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Rowan Faber was 1 for 3 with an RBI while Schultz was also 1 for 3 with a run scored. Schettler went 1 for 2 with a solo homerun and while Addy Wohlhuter was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Ida Rohman went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s
The Mavericks will play for the Section 2A Championship on Thursday at 5:00 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. They await the winner of USC and New Ulm Cathedral who will play on Tuesday. USC defeated Cleveland 1-0 in 11 innings to stay alive in the consolation bracket while NUC defeated Sleepy Eye 7 to 1.
