Mavericks on doorstep of history against familiar foe

The Martin County West softball team is one win away from living the dream of going “All The Way” to the State Tournament this year.
The top-ranked Mavericks simply have to knock out the defending state champion to do it. United South Central persevered after an early playoff upset and now awaits into the section title bout on Thursday.
The 24-1 Mavericks have won 16 straight games and stand alone as the only unbeaten team in the Section 2A Tournament bracket.
They replaced the Rebels on top of the Class A coaches poll after a 1-0 upset victory in Wells on May 11. MCW also has recent postseason success against USC. That includes dealing last year’s Class A title squad the only loss of the year and a win during the 2024 as well. USC got the last laugh each of the past three years.
The 21-4 Rebels suffered an upset loss to Nicollet in the playoffs but also got their revenge on the Raiders to advance to this section title chance. USC’s two other losses this season are against Class AA teams including Randolph and top-ranked Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial. The Rebels must beat MCW twice to steal the State Tournament bid.
