Mavericks get #2 seed in Section 2A Tournament

The Martin County West volleyball team is the #2 seed in the Section 2A Tournament.

MCW will host #15 seed New Ulm Cathedral on Monday, October 26, to begin the postseason. Coverage begins at 6:45 with the first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Xtreme.

The Mavericks appeared on one Class A coaches poll ballot at 21-2 overall entering the postseason. They only lost to Cleveland on October 8 and Murray County Central in best-of-three tournament play on September 19 at the Carolyn Hummel Invitational. The Greyhounds are 3-22 overall as of Monday and lost to MCW on September 1 in one of 19 sweeps and 12 in best-of-five competition by the Mavericks this year.

The winner of Monday’s match in Trimont plays the winner of #7 United South Central and #10 Sleepy Eye on Thursday, October 29. MCW swept Sleepy Eye on October 13 but hasn’t played USC since beating the Rebels in the 2023 playoffs.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s is the #3 seed hosting #14 Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey. Cedar Mountain is the #6 seed hosting #11 Springfield. The winners of those matches meet on Thursday. If the Mavericks advance to the semifinal round, they will play one of these four teams. MCW beat three of them in the regular season but didn’t play Springfield.

Cleveland is the top section seed and ranked fifth in the latest Class A coaches poll. The Clippers are hosting #16 seed GHEC-T-ML. Nicollet is the #8 seed hosting #9 Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart. Those match winners play each other on Thursday. MCW beat Nicollet and GHEC-T-ML during the regular season.

BOLD is the #4 seed hosting #13 seed GFW. Mankato Loyola is the #5 seed hosting #12 Madelia. Those match winners play each other on Thursday. MCW beat GFW, Mankato Loyola, and Madelia during the regular season.

All of the quarterfinal matches will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in that part of the bracket. Semifinal action moves to St. Peter High School on Monday, November 2. The section championship match is Thursday, November 5, at the same location.
