MAVERICKS DROP WOOD BAT TOURNAMENT OPENER

The Martin County West baseball team started the Howard Schmidtke Wood Bat Tournament with a loss to St. James Area on Friday night.
The Saints took the 11-1 win over the Mavericks in five innings.
The Saints scored four times in the first, twice in the second, and once more in the third for a 7-0 lead. MCW scored in the fourth when Preston Cepress tagged up to score on a Noah Meixell fly out. The Saints scored twice in the fourth and fifth to walk off the run-rule victory. Easton Kuehl earned a walk as the Saints no-hit the Mavericks.
Kaleb Kennedy took the loss on the mound with seven runs allowed and six earned on five hits plus one strikeout and three walks. Huxley Clow came on in relief with four earned runs allowed on two hits plus two strikeouts and four walks during 1.2 innings.
The 3-11 Mavericks play United South Central on Saturday. The 9-4 Rebels have won three straight games and beat the Mavericks 13-3 at home on April 21. Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Veterans Field.
