Mavericks clash with Knights in section volleyball semifinal

The Martin County West volleyball team is two wins away from the State Tournament.

The 23-2 Mavericks play Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in the Section 2A Tournament semifinals at St. Peter High School on Monday night.

The 23-4-1 Knights set up that match with their own home sweep of Cedar Mountain. MCW extended a four-match winning streak with a hard-fought home sweep of United South Central. The Knights ended the Mavericks season in St. Peter last year. MCW is looking to return to the State Tournament for the first time since 2014. They finished runner-up in Class A in 2010 during a stretch of four appearances in six years. First-year head coach Kari Brolsma played on the 1991 debut squad.

The section semifinals feature the top four seeds in the bracket. Cleveland and BOLD will play in the other semifinal. The fifth-ranked Clippers are 29-2 and the Warriors are 17-12 overall. That first serve is at 6:00 p.m. on Monday in St. Peter. Cleveland is the top seed and ranked fifth in Class A. Cleveland is seeking a third trip to the State Tournament and first since 2006 with a Class A runner-up finish in 2003. BOLD is looking to debut at the State Tournament.

The Section 2A championship match is Thursday, November 5, at 6:00 p.m. inside St. Peter High School.
