The Jackson County Central football team begins a brand new pursuit of a third straight state championship on Thursday night.
The top-ranked Huskies welcome the Maple River Eagles to Swearingen Field for the season opener. JCC head coach Tom Schuller says the theme of the new year is “targeted by all, outworked by none” after back-to-back titles.
The Huskies enter Thursday looking to extend winning streaks of 26 straight games overall and 33 consecutive victories in the regular season. They have a record of 50-2 over the past four years with section titles and at least a state semifinal appearance in each of those seasons.
Maple River was one win away from the state playoffs last year. The Eagles haven’t finished below .500 since 2010 with a pair of state appearances in 2016 and 2021. The Eagles only lost to JCC and fellow state qualifier Waterville-Elysian-Morristown last year.
Coach Schuller says this will be a showdown of quality programs with high standards and lofty goals.
Coverage begins at 6:40 with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on KKOJ Radio and Explore Live Video.
Thursday night is White Out Night at Swearingen Field with all fans encouraged to wear white and the first 250 fans getting white pom poms. The seniors will be signing posters after the game as well.
Alumni who are attending the game to honor the late Ron Kyle are being asked to gather in the North End Zone next to the concession stand at around 6:30 p.m. and look for Carrie Schuller.
