Scott Bahr’s 40th season with the Jackson Bulls started with a big win over Heron Lake on Sunday.
The Bulls bested the Lakers 11-1 on the road.
Jackson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then added two more runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth.
Cael Miller, Andy Wolf, Chris Gumto, and Alex Bretzman each hit a pair of singles. Miller scored twice. Wolf and Gumto each scored once. Easton Bahr and Blake Evans scored twice.
Javen Baumgarn and Paxton Cress each pitched three innings for the Bulls. Crees dealt six strikeouts and Baumgarn had five K’s. Ryan Rasche had a trio of strikeouts and one walk in a pair of innings. Alex Bretzman struck out the side in the third.
Nick Walinga hit one of his two singles and later scored on a passed ball in the seventh for the only Lakers run.
Logan Knutson pitched all nine innings for the Lakers and had four strikeouts.
The 1-0 Bulls have their home opener at Wacker Field against the Windom Pirates next Sunday.
The 0-2 Lakers host the Pipestone A’s next Sunday.
The Lakefield Horned Frogs opened the season with a loss in Luverne.
The Redbirds protected their home field 12-2 in seven innings.
Justin Holinka scored on a passed ball and Ike Rodgers singled to bring Kash Gilbert to the plate in the top of the third inning for all of the Horned Frogs scoring.
Phil Pronk took the loss for Lakefield with eight runs and seven of them earned on 10 hits in three innings of work. Gabe Wolff had three strikeouts in two innings as the starter but surrendered four earned runs on three hits. Dustin Pronk registered one strikeout and one walk in the third.
The 0-1 Horned Frogs visit the Worthington Cubs next Sunday.
