The Dickinson County Nature Center will host Kenue Coffee…
The Spencer Municipal Band under the direction of co-directors Katie Bush and Tom Rutt will
open their summer season of concerts on Thursday. The concert will be held at Westview
Memorial Park at 7:00 p.m. The rain location will be the Southpark Mall. The concert is free and
the band is supported by the City of Spencer and the Spencer Community Schools.
“After looking at the calendar, we felt we should start our concerts a bit earlier this year,” said
Bush. “We have been working the last few years to move our band concerts out into the
community to share our music with some new friends and neighbors,” said Rutt. “We have had
our concerts in this area years ago when we played at the former Northshire Nursing Facility.
We thought it was time to return to this part of town,” said Bush.
The band will continue their custom of inviting friends of the band to help with the
announcements at their concerts following the tradition of longtime Spencer High School
Director, John D. (Jack) Ryan and his wife Karen, who served for many years as the municipal
band’s announcer. The announcer for this concert will be Jason Jacobs from Thrivent
Financial. “Jason’s voice may be familiar to our listeners as he was on KUOO for many years
and still does some sports broadcasts with them,” said Bush. “Jason has graciously helped us
each year with our concerts and we enjoy working with him and all of our guest MC’s,” said
Rutt.
The band will have a nice variety of tunes at this concert. The concert will begin with John
Philip Sousa’s ‘Liberty Bell.” Dean Bush, will be the vocal soloist on “Some Enchanted
Evening.” The band will finish up with a trumpet trio feature on “Bugler’s Holiday” and a
municipal band favorite, “Black Tower Overture
