Located in the heart of downtown Spirit Lake, Iowa, The Venue/Sportsmans is a space deeply tied to the community’s history. Long before it became a modern event and gathering space, the building was home to the well-known Spirit Lake Bakery.
Spirit Lake Bakery has roots dating back to at least the 1940s through the 1970s, serving generations of local residents with fresh breads, pastries, and homemade treats. One of its unique local favorites was its cheese and baked goods, which helped make it a memorable stop in downtown Spirit Lake. The bakery eventually closed in the 1990s, but its presence and memories remained tied to the building.
Over time, the space was transformed into what is now known as The Venue/Sportmans, giving new life to a familiar downtown landmark while preserving its historic charm. Though its purpose has changed, the sense of community and connection has remained at the heart of the building.
This year, The Venue is also celebrating an incredible milestone: 30 years of serving the Spirit Lake community. Over those three decades, it has evolved and grown while still honoring its roots, making it a place where history and new memories continue to meet.
