Comments:
I am very pleased to see that the momentum the team gained the last couple weeks, and especially after the conference tournament Saturday, continued in today’s meet. Varsity was able to win one additional match compared to the first time we played ELC earlier in the season, and they did so against an improved ELC team that I thought played very well. This was also the first time we played with the scoring format our conference uses during the second half of the season. Instead of a 10 game pro-set, we will now play 2 out of 3 sets to 6 from here on out. And I believe our guys adjusted well to that format, including adjusting to the no-ad game scoring we are also using for the remainder of the regular season. But even though the final score was 8-1, the meet definitely felt a lot closer than the score might indicate. The first sets in almost every singles match were extremely tight and competitive. Fortunately we were able to pull out those tight sets, either by a 2 game margin, or in a tiebreak in the case of Ryley at #2. And three of the singles matches ended up with split sets, which means they play a long tiebreaker to decide the match in place of the final set. And once again, fortunately we played great deciding tiebreakers and won all 3 we played. In the doubles, Michael and Ryley played some of their best tennis all season, coming off of their conference tournament victory last Saturday, and they turned the tables in convincing fashion on a team that had beaten them twice before. And we had somewhat new combinations for our other two doubles matches. Will and Jason had just played together at the varsity level last Saturday, which went great as they won the #2 doubles division. They didn’t play as well in this match as they did on Saturday, and their opponents played very well, but our guys are still getting used to each other, and I’m confident they will get right back on track very soon. And the #3 combination of Hunter and Calvin is new to both of them as well. Hunter hit some great forehands in that match, and Calvin did a great job playing in his first varsity meet, coming away with the win with Hunter in doubles, and a come from behind victory at #6 singles. We come right back tomorrow with another home meet against Storm Lake, who we have yet to play this year. And I really like our matchup against Storm Lake, especially since we are coming off of a couple good dual meet wins in a row, as well as the 2nd place finish in last Saturday’s tournament. -Dan Taylor
