A Busy Stretch Of Road On West Side Of Spencer Could Soon See A Reduction In The Speed Limit

November 04, 2026

(Spencer)– There could soon be a reduction in the speed limit on a busy stretch of road on the west side of Spencer.

The city council Monday voted to schedule a public hearing on a proposal to lower the speed limit on a portion of West 4th Street near Pivot Point and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. The speed limit in that area was recently raised to 60 mph.

City Manager Kevin Robinson says a speed study of that area was recently conducted by County Engineer Cole Budach. Robinson says it takes into consideration the current traffic flows in that area, which will likely change in coming years…

“If the industrial park gets built out, houses get added, we would re-assess and re-analyze. We made a decision, Cole collected the data, wrote the report. We mutually agreed with the report that based on today’s traffic, this is the best decision to make. And we also agreed that we should monitor and watch and if that traffic increases out there, then we will re-visit not only the speed limits but the control of the intersection. So both of those are on the radar for the county and the city staff.”

Budach told the city council Monday the primary reason for the proposed changes is due to a high volume of crashes at the intersection of West 4th Street and 32nd Avenue West.
