(Spirit Lake)– We are in the midst of National 4-H Week. Locally, Fallon Jensen, County Youth Coordinator for ISU Extension and Outreach Dickinson county, says about 100 youth are currently involved and that they’re working to increase that…
“We have offered free enrollment this year thanks to some generous donors. New Cooperative, Iowa Corn and Okoboji Motors have made it possible for us to offer free enrollment to help us get those numbers up even higher.”
Jensen says they’ve been commemorating the week with various activities. Monday featured make and take bags; Tuesday was popcorn and painting rocks; and this (Wed.) afternoon will feature ice cream being served at the extension office along with a robot preview from 3:00 until 4:30 pm. She says the events tomorrow (Thurs.) will involve their Facebook page…
“We’ll have a picture. In that picture they will be guessing the amount of candy corn that is in a jar. If you guess, whoever is correct or gets the closest will get that jar and then we’ve also got a prize to go along with that. And then Friday along with that we will have another picture on our Facebook page and it is our Favorite Foul Friday. So posting any pictures of your favorite foul whether that be a chicken, a duck or an ostrich, whatever that is, your favorite picture of your favorite type of foul.”
Jensen adds you don’t have to live on a farm to belong to 4-H…
“There are so many kids that just do some of our special interest clubs. That would like robotics, we have an outdoor club, we have a cooking club. We have so many different options. Kids can bring different things to the fair. That may look like sewing or re-purposing a old piece of furniture or something like that. There really is something for everyone and there’s so many different directions that kids can go. We have a ton of resources. It’s just a matter of finding out what you like and maybe you don’t like.”
