(Spirit Lake)– The respiratory virus season is just around the corner and local health officials say it’s time to prepare. Brandi Larsen of Dickinson County Public Health says now’s the time for us to get those flu shots…
“The annual vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older. September and October are usually the best months to get vaccinated. It takes about two weeks after the shot for your body to build up the protection it needs, so getting vaccinated before the flu starts circulating will give you the best coverage going into those winter months.”
She says the flu is something that no one should take for granted…
“It can spread quickly to our family, to our coworkers, and there’s people that are at higher risk for complications so an annual flu vaccine does help lower the risk of flu and make illnesses less severe if you do get sick.”
Larsen says Dickinson County Public Health does have flu vaccine available and will soon have updated covid shots available as well…
“The cost of the flu vaccine is $30 for the regular dose if it’s not covered by your insurance, and $70 for the high dose. Just bring a copy of your insurance card with you at the time of your appointment.”
Dickinson County Public Health holds immunization clinics on Tuesdays from 9:00 until 11:30 am and 1:00 until 5:30 pm and Wednesdays from 2:00 until 4:30 pm. Appointments are necessary and may be made by calling 712-339-6050.
Flu shots are also available at area pharmacies and Lakes Regional Family Medicine.
