(Spirit Lake)– Efforts to extend a recreational trail on former railroad right-of-way from Orleans to just west of Superior are getting a boost. Erin Reed of the Dickinson County Trails Board told the Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning they’ve been awarded funding through the State Rec Trails fund to help out with the first two miles of the project…
“Our ask was $535,000 and we were awarded $475,000. There were 28 applications to the State Rec Trails Fund. Total cost for those projects was over $53 million and the total amount requested was almost $13.9 million. Six projects got funded, ours was one of them. Of the three projects that were funded, they were all given less than their ask, which was one of ours was that, however we did receive the most funding of all grant recipients.”
Reed says that sets the stage to apply for federal funding for an additional two mile segment further east…
“With that being the case we want to move forward with the next two miles on the Fed Rec Trail side because we do already have $400,000 coming due next year with the TAP Grant which is also federal funding. So if we are able to get the federal funding that would really take care of most of our cost on this project.”
The supervisors voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution to apply for the additional federal funding.
