(Lakefield, Mn.)– Development of area corn and soybean crops is running ahead of normal. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says maturity of some earlier planted corn is now weeks away…
“We’ve got some of the earlier corn that’s starting to dent and most everything’s in that dough stage so we’re moving along there. It looks like we maybe could possibly black layer in September so, you know, that’s good news in terms of worrying about an early frost, but I think that’s not a big concern right now.”
He says the same holds true for soybeans…
“Soybeans, a lot of them or podding and R-4, late R-4, some early R-5’s, depending on the planting date and of course the maturity of those soybeans so the big picture is crops are moving on fast.”
Nesseth says there is some concern though for areas just west of us, where conditions have been quite a bit drier. He says corn in portions of Nobles and Rock counties is starting to shut down and some of the ears aren’t filling out due to the extremely dry conditions. He says the rain we are currently receiving is most definitely welcome.
