Comments From Spirit Lake Coach Brad Travis:
Tonight was an historic night for our boys and girls track teams! After 100 Years our Lakes Conference will be ending. With this being the final Lakes Conference Track meet it was extra special for our kids to go out on top. But it was more how they did it that made this meet special. From the beginning to the end of the meet our kids kept their foot on the gas and gave it everything they had. With track meets starting with the field events tonight was extra special to see Lauren Travis come of ACL injury status and finally be able to return to the ring and throw. While “just” a power throw her second throw would not only win the meet but also put her to the top of the list in 2A Shot put for the state with a throw of 43-11.5 …and with that the meet was ON! In fact, every shot putter would PR on the night. Beck with a 35-10, Theesfeld with a 49-0, and Knutson breaking into the 53-foot bracket! The energy then spread to all the other field events and by their end the boys and girls had amassed 67 points just in the field events, seeing Jax Benjarno and Anabel Sinz also taking home golds along with Beck and Travis tying for 1st in the Discus. By the time the gun started firing off races, the stage was set for the night, and our kids just kept adding hardware to the bucket. In just our relays for the night our boys would claim 1st in 4 out of 7 relays and our girls 2 golds in relays but getting 2nd in all of the other relays! As a team, both our boys and girls would score in EVERY event on the night with. The boys came very close to doing what our girls did by having ALL of our girls place in every individual event they participated in. In the individual running events, we would have multiple Lakes Conference Champions. For the girls Leah Bolluyt in the 100M, Miley Wells in the 200M, Anabel Sinz in the 400M, Marie Mueting would go on to claim 2x in the 800M and 1500M. Boys Individual running Champs saw Kyler Hagedorn winning the 400H and Jace Hungerford winning the 800,1600, and 3200. Include the relay victory in the D’md with his other teammates and you would have seen Jace run 4 total miles on the night to get 40 points for his team! While we also saw many seconds on the night also, I like to think that championships are truly won by the kids that step up and earn the little points for the team. These are the hardest points to predict and, in my mind, often the most rewarding to see kids achieve. For our girls we saw some big PRs that would also get us some major points for the team. Anna Pritchard would place 4th in the 3000M, Macy Pruin would get us a 3rd in the 1500, Josie Holter getting 5th in the High Jump and JJ Wassenaar stepped up big to place 4th in the 400H. Our boys also saw some. On the Boys side of things 3 kids really stood out earning us some “unsure points”. Lucas Bolluyt (Remember that boy who tore his ACL in Football) has been coming on strong to the end of the year, he earned a 4th in the 100m and a 6th in a highly contested 200M. Braedin Nebelsick ran a gritty 400H race to place 5th. I know I already spoke his name, but Nolan Theesfeld had a HUGE PR in the Shot put and deserves some more credit for his impressive 3rd place finish. Perhaps the greatest example of how well these kids did tonight would be to count their PRs for the night. On a typical night late in the year, you hope for 10-15 PRs in a night. Tonight our boys and girls would combine for a total of 57 PRs! The girls would have 26x and the boys 31x PRs on the night! It truly was a special night and a fitting end to the Lakes Conference seeing Spirit Lake on Top Forever!
We now have one final meet for the year. That being Districts or as I like to think of it the Prelims of State! We are lucky to be hosting 2A at Home this year and if you want to see something special, I encourage you all to come out and watch these kids do incredible things next Thursday the 14th of May
