The fifth-ranked Martin County West softball team brought home an intense doubleheader sweep from Ellsworth on Saturday.
The Mavericks pulled away from the Dragons 14-4 in the first game.
MCW scored six runs in the first inning. The Dragons scored three times in the bottom half to cut the deficit in half. MCW added four more in the third for a 10-1 Mavericks lead. The Dragons scored once more in the home half. MCW added one more run in the fourth and sixth before two more in the seventh.
Courtney Anderson smacked a three run home run in the first among two hits. Ida Rohman went 4-for-4 with only doubles on the day and batted in three runs. Emily Schettler had a pair of hits including a triple and plated a pair of runs. Addy Wohlhuter had two hits and batted in one run. Bailey Larson plated a pair of runs with a single. Emma Geldart also batted in one run.
Maddie Carlson went the distance with seven strikeouts and one hit batter.
The Mavericks had to rally but were too much for the Dragons 19-9 in six innings in the second game.
The Dragons built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first and four in the second. MCW started a comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second and tied the game with four more in the third. THe Dragons took the lead again with two runs in the fourth. MCW took over the 9-8 lead with a trio in the fourth. The Dragons tied it back up in the fifth. MCW exploded for eight runs in the fifth and another pair in the sixth to walk off the run-rule victory.
Rowan Faber hit a solo home run in the third among two hits and scored four times. Faber also took the win on the mound with three runs and one walk allowed in 3.1 relief innings of work.
Courtney Anderson went yard again with a three-run homer in the fifth. Maddie Carlson had a three-run triple in the fifth as well. Addy Wohlhuter had a trio of hits including a double and brought home four runs. Ida Rohman had a pair of doubles, batted in a pair of runs, and scored four times. Emma Geldart and Lillie Schultz each batted in a pair of runs.
Sydney Clow had one strikeout and one walk but allowed six runs in 1.2 innings as the starter. Carlson closed the door in the sixth with one strikeout in the frame.
The 10-1 Mavericks have won three straight games with Minnesota Valley Lutheran visiting on Monday. The 4-9 Chargers have lost six straight games. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Fox Lake Area Sports Complex.
