(Spencer)– The Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation holds its first annual “Build My Future” event this Thursday at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer.
Trevor Smith of the Corridor says some 750 area high school students will attend with over 50 businesses being represented. Smith says it won’t be your ordinary job fair, with hands-on demonstrations for the students…
“This is a huge workforce need, and as we went through and talked to all of our schools in the region, anywhere from 20 to 40 percent of high school seniors don’t go off to a traditional four-year university. They go to community college, they go to direct training, apprenticeships, or right into the workforce. And so it’s important for us to showcase all those opportunities that are available right here in northwest Iowa and try to retain them and help bridge that cap between our industries and that workforce we’re needing here in northwest Iowa.”
Smith says a wide range of businesses and industries will be represented…
“Safety, PPE equipment, and get to try all kinds of different things. We’ve got welding machines, we’ve got forklift operating, the police are bringing all their SWAT tactical gear and so many fun things that we’re really excited for these students to participate in.”
Smith says two different sessions will be held Thursday, with one in the morning and another in the afternoon.
