Multiple Departments Respond Monday To Field/Cornstalk/Ditch Fire In Clay County

March 31, 2026

(Dickens)– A fire that burned through a field of cornstalks and some ditches Monday in eastern Clay county involved an estimated 150 acres of land. Fire departments from Dickens, Ruthven and Webb responded to the scene near 390th Avenue and 310th Street southeast of Dickens around 3:45 pm.

Dickens Fire Chief Kevin Whalen says two homes were in the path of the flames, but both were protected. He estimates about 8,000 gallons of water was used in putting out the fire. Firefighters were on the scene several hours. There were no reports of any injuries.

It’s believed gusty wind reignited a controlled burn that had been recently conducted in that area.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control as the fire did jump a county road.
