(Spencer)– The city of Spencer is implementing a new “Public Transportation Levy” as part of the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
City Manager Kevin Robinson addressed the new levy during a public hearing at a special city council meeting Monday evening. Robinson says it’s the result of a significant increase in funding RIDES is requesting from the city due to funding cuts that agency is experiencing…
“I just want to address, there was public commentary on social media about this is a new levy and are there games being played because there was a study from the State Auditor that came out that showed that there was misappropriation of funds and is the city just putting this public transportation levy in to offset money that was stolen from the city? I want the public to hear me very clearly: the answer is no. These are not connected. They have nothing to do with each other. The litigation that will occur in the future regarding the State Auditor’s findings has zero to do with this budget. This public transportation levy is just that: it’s a public transportation levy.”
Robinson says the new levy amounts to 6.8 cents per one thousand dollars of valuation. He says it will be included in future fiscal year budgets as well.
