MINNESOTA CROWNS GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONS

The Minnesota State High School League crowned four 2026 girls basketball state champions at the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena on Saturday.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s scored the first 14 points of the game and earned its first state championship with a wire-to-wire 80-63 victory over top-seeded Mountain Iron-Buhl in the Class A title game. The 32-1 Knights led 42-16 at the half and were up by as many as 28 points. The Rangers rallied to within 10 in the second half but the early hole was too much to overcome.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s ended a hard-fourth journey with a 75-63 victory over top-seeded Stewartville to capture the Class AAA crown for the fourth consecutive season. The 26-6 Red Knights won their third Class AAA title and snapped a 28-game winning streak for the 29-2 top-seeded Tigers to do it.

Providence Academy became the first team to win five consecutive state titles with a 95-60 victory over Marshall School, Duluth in the Class AA final. Lions senior Maddyn Greenway closed a historic six-year chapter with 5,621 points as the state’s all-time leading scorer after putting up 33 against the second-seeded Hilltoppers. The fifth consecutive championship is also the sixth overall for the Lions.

Class AAAA champion Rosemount recorded the biggest victory in program history with a thrilling 63-62 comeback win over top-seeded Hopkins in the final tournament game. The 29-3 Irish denied the 27-3 Royals a 10th championship in program history. Rosemount was the big-school runner-up in its first state tournament appearance in 1988 and again in 2021 before finally winning it all this year.
