Several Grass Fires Reported In Region During Wednesday’s High Winds

February 20, 2026

(Undated)– Burn piles reignited by strong wind were said to have been the cause of fires Wednesday in Lyon and O’Brien counties.

The George Fire Department was called around 11:45 am to a grass fire on the edge of the George city limits. Several trees, a small square hay bale and a burn pile were extinguished, with minimal damage. Firefighters were on the scene about a half hour.

The other fire was near Primghar. That department was called around 1:15 pm to 5818 380th Street for a report of a grove fire. Trees, two unoccupied dairy calf huts were on fire along with vegetation. Four other huts had been damaged by fire and smoke. The fire was being fanned by strong wind but firefighters were able to contain it before it could spread to a nearby building. They disassembled the burn pile and cut down the burned trees. They were on the scene about an hour and-a-half.

There was also a report of a grass fire Wednesday on the Clay-Buena Vista county line near Sioux Rapids.

There were no reports of injuries in any of the fires.
