The Windom Area boys hockey team survived Redwood Valley at home in the opening round of the Section 3A Boys Hockey Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Eagles clipped the Cardinals 3-2 in overtime.
RV had the 1-0 lead after the first period. Isaiah Adams found the equalizer with the assist by Ayden Endreson in the second period. Daniel Staples blitzed to the go-ahead goal 25 seconds into the third period. The Cardinals later tied the game and forced overtime. Staples scored the game-winner with help from Andrei Rivera and Cormac Raderstorf for the 3-2 victory.
The 9-16-1 Eagles visit top-seeded Luverne on Thursday.
The Fairmont boys hockey team routed Worthington at home.
Gavin Keester had a hat trick in the first period including a power play goal and Noah Meixell lit the lamp as well for a 4-0 Cardinals lead. Jase Meade added a power play goal and Preston Cepress also scored to grow the lead to 6-0 Fairmont after the second period. The Trojans broke up the shutout in the third before Klay Beemer found the net for the 7-1 final score. Beemer also assisted with four Fairmont goals on the night.
The 8-13 Cardinals visit #2 seed Mankato West on Thursday.
