Estherville City Council Denies Request For Bow Hunting On Some City-Owned Land

November 18, 2025

(Estherville)– Oaths of office were administered to the newly elected mayor and two new city council members at Monday’s Estherville City Council meeting. Tony Condon was elected Mayor and Tim Ahrens and Steve Fanslau were elected to the ward 3 and 4 seats November 4th.

A request by a resident to bow hunt on a parcel of city-owned land near Oak Hill Cemetery was also on the agenda. The land is located near the Izaak Walton League’s trap range. Police Chief Brent Shatto expressed concern over the possibility of a precedent being set should the council allow the request…

“We have a lot of other city property and if we allow one person to hunt this piece, we would probably be fairly safe up in that area, but we have areas along the river, down by our city buildings and where the campground potentially will go, we have other areas of town. The 4th Street bridge area where we may get requests once it’s out there.”

Council member Steve Fanslau, who lives in that area, agreed…

“The city has 147 parcels that we own so it would be all over. Small lots, large parcels, places along the river. I think it would set a precedence.”

The council voted unanimously to deny the request.
