(Spirit Lake)– The northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, put on a stunning show across the northern U.S. Tuesday evening, and northwest Iowa was no exception. Many reported seeing the breathtaking display without the aid of a camera lens.
The Aurora Borealis is the result of geomagnetic storms on the sun. The solar wind disperses the charged particles, which enter the earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field, producing a variety of colors.
There’s a possibility they could be visible again tonight (Wed.) but probably not quite to the magnitude of what they were Tuesday night.
