Estherville City Council Grants Final Approval To Removing A Set Of Stoplights

November 05, 2025

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday granted final approval on amending an ordinance allowing the removal of some stoplights at the intersection of North 6th Street and 2nd Avenue North. However, City Administrator Penny Clayton recommended the lights remain in place yet for a little while longer before they’re taken out…

“I also though had a request that we delay the implementation of this until the construction is done on the courthouse because there are a lot of large vehicles and obstructions in the view when you’re at 1st and 6th so that’s something we can do fairly easily just by not publishing it. After council adopts an ordinance it has to be published before it is effective.”

Another amendment the council formally approved Monday evening will result in stop signs being put in place for traffic on 2nd Avenue North at the intersection, once the signals are removed. Clayton says she’s already heard from one resident, however, that would like to see the intersection made a four-way stop. Council members previously had said it could be something they’d consider in the future, but want to see first how stopping traffic on 2nd Avenue North works.
