Officials Remind Everyone To Play It Safe This Halloween

October 30, 2025

(Spirit Lake)– Area law enforcement agencies are putting out a reminder for everyone to play it safe this Halloween. Spirit Lake Police Chief Shane Brevik says offers a few tips those planning to trick-or-treat Friday evening…

“For some of our younger trick-or-treaters, make sure you’re staying in groups or with an adult. If at all possible wear light-colored clothing or reflective clothing also works well. Try to use the sidewalks whenever possible and then anytime you have to cross the street, kind of that old saying, look both ways before you do. If at all possible maybe wear some glow sticks or maybe carry a flashlight with you. And then another thing we’ve noticed is that if you know that a house is dark, kind of assume that they’re not going to be participating in it so you can leave those houses alone. And then lastly and maybe most importantly, have your parents or somebody examine that candy before you start eating it.”

Brevik also urges motorists to be extra vigilant, especially in neighborhoods on the city’s south side…

“Between Hill Avenue and Keokuk Avenue on 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th Streets are all super congested. And then anywhere kind of down in the Southern Hills part we’re starting to see a lot more traffic in the last several years so that’s going to be from 36th Street south to 38th Street between Hill and kind of Lincoln, in that new subdivision. We’re getting a lot of foot traffic in those two areas specifically.”

The preferred hours for trick-or-treating in most communities is from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Friday evening. In Terril, trick-or-treating will be taking place SATURDAY evening, November 1st.
