Cherokee County Authorities Investigating Two Attempted Child Abductions

October 03, 2025

(Cherokee)– Authorities in one northwest Iowa county are investigating two attempted child abductions.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says the first attempted abduction took place around 3:00 pm Tuesday, September 30th, at a city park in Cleghorn. Authorities say two children, ages 4 and 10, were playing at the park when a pickup drove up. The driver was described as a dark-skinned man with dirty blonde hair and possibly a mustache. He was wearing a black hoodie. Authorities say the man attempted to offer the kids candy and that he tried to pick up the 4-year-old but left after the 10-year-old child intervened. The kids then ran home. It’s believed the pickup had out-of-state plates, possibly from Connecticut.

Upon investigating the incident, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was informed of another attempted child abduction in Cherokee two weeks earlier. In that case, authorities say a white man in his 40’s, driving a dually pickup, followed a 10-year-old girl home from school.
