Library to Reveal Updated Spanish Collection and Offer Spanish Storytimes
Spencer Public Library was excited to receive a grant from the Clay County Community Foundation to update their Spanish Collection. While talking to members of the Spanish community about books they would like to see the library purchase, two members stepped forward and offered to help the Children’s Librarian with Spanish Storytime.
The library has always offered Storytime every Tuesday at 10AM, but they have not offered a storytime featuring Spanish. The bilingual storytimes will be held on the last Tuesday of every month at 10 AM and one Monday every month at 4:30PM. All library storytimes offer a theme related craft at the end of the readings.
“The library was so lucky to find two Spanish speaking members in our community willing to volunteer their time. In the mornings we will have Nydia Butler and Marilyn Albino will be at the library in the afternoons,” says Children’s Librarian Kayla Schlichte. The next Spanish Storytime will be on October 24 at 4:30 PM when Marilyn will read Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago. On October 25 at 10 AM, Nydia will read Sana, Sana, Colita De Rana by Citali Reyes. They will also focus on colors in both English and Spanish and talk about the Mexican Celebration, Day of the Dead. On October 25, After the story and craft, the community is invited for the Library’s reveal of our updated children’s, teen, and adult books in our Spanish collection courtesy of the Clay County Community Foundation Grant. Refreshments will be provided. “We are excited about our updated Spanish Collection. Not only will it benefit those people in our community where Spanish is their first language, but it will benefit those that have English as their first language and who would like to learn or brush up on their Spanish,” says Director Sarah Beth Fuchsen. The library also has Spanish ebooks and audiobooks available on Bridges site through the Libby ap and a library card. Library Card Applications are now available in both English and Spanish.
