We Now Know The Make-up Of A Committee That Will Research Flood Control Options

July 02, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– We now know the make-up of a committee that will research possible options for flood control in the Iowa Great Lakes. The Board of Supervisors Saturday voted to form the committee after hearing from downstream officials. Supervisor Kim Wermersen outlined the make-up of that committee at this (Tues.) morning’s Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting…

“We have two supervisors from Dickinson county, two supervisors from Clay county, the Mayor from Spencer, our Dickinson County Engineer, Mike Hawkins with the DNR, John Wills with Water Quality, Steve Anderson…the Milford Mayor as well as Sanitary Sewer and Bill Anderson with Cherokee Economic Development.”

Fellow supervisor Steve Clark said there’s a two-pronged goal for the group…

“I think we’re going to try to come up with short term goal and then let everybody know what we’re thinking as far as long term that are in our plans, that have already been in there the last few years and where we’re going from here. I think it’s really important to let people downstream know there has been no talk about breaching the road down at Lower Gar by the supervisors.”

The committee will hold it’s first meeting this afternoon. It is closed to the media and the public. Wermersen says any recommendations from the committee will come to the Board of Supervisors for formal action. No firm timeframe for that was given.
