(Okoboji)-The Friends of Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will continue Tuesday evening with a talk by Dr. Jennifer Lamb with The Department of Biology at St. Cloud State University.
Lamb says she’ll discuss some current research projects. “I’ll be talking about two ongoing research projects. One is focused on a really cool salamander, called the Four-toed Salamander, and we’re using environmental DNA, so basically small pieces of DNA that are in the environment, to figure out where the salamander occurs, and we’re hoping to be able to use this technique as kind of three of techniques to help The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources manage and monitor populations of the salamander. The second project I’ll talk about is focusing on Blanding’s Turtles, as well as other turtles in Minnesota. The DNR is really interested in this Blanding’s Turtle, as well. It’s a threatened species in the state and we’re testing out two kind of different approaches for finding the turtles. One is kind of a more traditional approach using aquatic tracks, and the other is actually using trail cameras pointed at basking platforms. We’re just trying to see which method might help us might help us detect these species more efficiently.”
Dr. Lamb will speak Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Campus starting at 7 o’clock. The talk is free and open to the public.
