Black Hills Energy Monitoring Ongoing Situation In Spencer

June 22, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Officials with Black Hills Energy say they’re continuing to closely monitor the situation in Spencer. They’re reminding residents to evacuate immediately if you smell natural gas and to turn off electrical appliance power if it’s safe to do so. Officials say flooding can damage appliances and creates a risk of electrical shock.

They add floodwaters carry silt and other contaminants that could damage air conditioners, natural gas meters and appliances including water heaters and furnaces.

Black Hills Energy asks impacted customers to call when returning to a home or business after floodwaters have receded to have gas service restored. They also recommend calling an appliance repair professional to inspect natural gas appliances. Black Hills Energy will inspect the metering equipment prior to restoring gas service.

Officials with Black Hills Energy say they are monitoring the situation in Spencer closely and are preparing to assess the natural gas system as soon as it’s possibly safe to do that.

***UPDATE: As a safety precaution during continued flooding in Spencer and the surrounding area, Black Hills Energy has temporarily suspended natural gas service to all customers in Spencer.

Black Hills Energy will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with emergency response officials.
