(Des Moines)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging people to stay off streams, rivers and lakes due to dangerous conditions from high water levels and wastewater bypasses.
The agency says several wastewater collection and treatment systems have reported bypasses to the DNR’s Spencer field office, along with some animal feeding operations. The discharges have been reported in Lyon, Sioux, Dickinson, O’Brien, Osceola and Clay counties. DNR officials say they are currently unaware of any fish kills or impacts to municipal water supplies, adding they are closely monitoring the situation.
The DNR says it’s also impacting several state parks, public beaches and accesses in the Iowa Great Lakes. Officials say some of those will likely be closed soon due to the conditions and potential hazards.
