Bird Flu Detected In Two More NW Iowa Dairy Herds

June 15, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in two more northwest Iowa dairy herds. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says one case is in a Plymouth county dairy herd and the other is in a Sioux county dairy. The case in Sioux county is the third in that county. A case was also detected recently in a dairy herd in O’Brien county.

Ag officials are strongly encouraging poultry producers and dairy farmers to bolster their biosecurity practices and protocols. Officials say there is no concern about the safety of pasteurized milk or dairy products. They add any threat to the general public remains low.

***UPDATE*** The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship this (Sat.) afternoon reported an ADDITIONAL detection of bird flu in a dairy herd in Sioux county, making it the fourth case in that county.
