(Spirit Lake)– There’s increased concern among farmers who have not been able to get their planting completed due to the wet weather. And officials say time is starting to run out. Gentry Sorenson, an agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, says they’ll be holding an informational meeting on that very topic Tuesday, May 28th at the Dickinson County Community Building on the fairgrounds in Spirit Lake…
“I’ll be covering some items such as stand evaluations, planting dates regarding the late planting period and some of the expectations we’ll be looking at for late planted corn and also due to some of the ponding and wet weather that we’ve had, corn and soybean survivability due to some of that ponding that we have received and some of those wet conditions.”
Sorenson says a crop insurance agent will also be on hand…
“The final planting date for full coverage for crop insurance, that date is arriving very quickly and that’s on May 31st for corn. We’re kind of timing this along with that crop insurance date to kind of get some of that information out to growers and farmers regarding the tough planting conditions that we’re currently seeing.”
Sorenson says Nancy Mays, Executive Director of the Dickinson County Farm Service Agency, will also be a presenter at Tuesday’s meeting…
“She’ll visit a little bit about the programs that the FSA has, and Gary Wright will be on hand as well to answer any questions and hear any comments from farmers and growers that are available, so.”
Tuesday’s informational program begins at 1:30 pm at the Dickinson County Community Building. The session is free and pre-registration isn’t necessary.
