(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation has secured a tract of land on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake owned by the Gruhn family.
The secured property will extend north of the Gruhn farmstead to a gravel road and then west to what’s known as the Pothoff property that was acquired by the INHF in 1997, also referred to as the Hales Slough Wildlife Management Area. The Gruhn purchase also includes an area extending west to the northeast shoreline of Sandbar Slough, then back across the north alongside the backside of the farmstead.
Officials say the acquisition will play a critical role in helping to protect and improve the water quality of Big Spirit Lake.
