(Spirit Lake)– Dangerous and potentially deadly winter weather is impacting the region and will continue to do so in coming days.
A winter storm warning is in effect until 3:00 pm this (Fri.) afternoon. That will be replaced with a blizzard warning at that time. It will remain in effect until midnight Saturday night. An additional 2 to 4 inches of snowfall can be expected on top of the 3 to 4 inches that has already fallen as of early this (Fri.) morning in the Iowa Great Lakes. However, the National Weather Service says the wind is going to be the issue. It’s expected to increase further with gusts as high as 45 mph by mid-afternoon today (Fri.). Forecasters say that will create extremely poor visibility in blowing and drifting snow.
Officials say any travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, they say you should have a winter survival kit in your vehicle and that if you get stranded, you should stay with your vehicle.
