(Spirit Lake)– After a very mild and calm December, old man winter appears to be making up for lost time. Another significant winter storm is threatening the region.
A winter storm watch has been issued for a good deal of the region, including the Iowa Great Lakes, from Thursday afteroon through Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service says 4 to 8 inches of new snowfall will be possible along with winds that could gust as high as 40 mph. Forecasters say that could make travel very difficult, if not impossible.
In addition, some of the coldest air in years will come in on the heels of the storm with overnight lows over the weekend and into early next week going well below zero, getting close to -20 at times. Daytime HIGHS by Sunday will also be well BELOW zero. Combined with the wind, feels like temperatures could exceed -40.
