(Spirit Lake)– That moose that was seen Wednesday wandering in the city of Spirit Lake and later seen standing on thin ice on East Lake Okoboji has met an unfortunate demise. DNR officials tell KUOO news there is evidence the young bull moose fell through the ice and drowned.
The moose had been seen earlier in the day Wednesday near the library in Spirit Lake and soon after in the Francis Sites area. It was then seen standing on thin ice on East Lake Okoboji, just off of Francis Sites. That’s where it was last reported late Wednesday afternoon.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued a statement this (Thurs.) afternoon saying crews with Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire and Rescue will attempt to recover the animal. The statement goes on to say the DNR will then transport it to Iowa State University for examination.
The DNR says the moose is estimated to be two-years-old and likely originated from northern Minnesota.
