(Orange City)– Officials with the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are impersonating one of that agency’s deputies. Authorities say the scammer has been calling people claiming to be Lieutenant Justin De Bruin. The person on the other end of the line is told they missed federal jury duty and that a warrant is being issued for their arrest unless they supply the scammer with numbers from a gift card.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says they do have a deputy by the name of Justin De Bruin on their staff, but he is NOT the one making the calls. Instead, they say it’s an imposter.
Authorities again remind everyone that anytime someone asks you to purchase a gift card, it’s a red flag. That is, of course, unless you’re going to give that person an actual gift. They add that you should never agree to make any kind of payments with prepaid gift cards as once you’ve read the number to the scammer, your money is gone and there’s no way to get it back.
