City Of Spencer Looking To Extend Expiration Dates Of Building Permits

November 24, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– A change could be in the works for how building permits are issued in the city of Spencer. Planning Director Adam Syverson says it would extend the amount of time the permits are in effect…

“This amendment would extend three building permit type limits within title 8, chapter 1 of our building code. The time for expiration will be extended for new single family dwellings form 14 months to 18 months; new multiple family dwellings from 20 months to 24 months; and all residential remodeling from 8 months 12 months.”

He adds the changes were proposed after the city heard concern from builders that the previous expiration timeframes were too short and that as a result, contractors would have to reapply for extensions, adding to the cost of the projects…

“The city compiled approximately data from 25 municipalities that compared their population, demographics, and their current building permit limitations and statuses for expiration and this was the most comfortable we thought with the blend of supply chain, keeping installers on site and so on, so forth, so.”

The city council earlier this week approved the first reading of the proposed ordinance revision.
