(Spirit Lake)– A smoldering pile of leaves at the city of Spirit Lake green waste site east of Orleans earlier today (Mon.) prompted a response from the Spirit Lake Fire Department. Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news they were called to that location a little before 10:30 am…
“They had some flames showing out of the pile there. When we got out there we didn’t see any flames both the whole big ole leaf pile is steaming, so we did some water on it, knocked the flames supposed to be there down, and right now the city is going to watch it and maintain it.”
Daly says they believe the origin of the fire was a result of natural causes…
“We had that rain on top of all those leaves and grass and then now all of a sudden we got those warm days and I think it just combusted underneath the pile.”
Daly says firefighters were assisted by crews with the city of Spirit Lake…
“The city brought out a couple of payloaders and they were breaking it down. We were kind of hosing it off and kind of wondering if we were actually doing anything, but maybe making it worse, so we quit and that’s when the city said they would just stand by and watch it.”
Firefighters were on the scene nearly an hour-and-a-half.
