Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Confirmed In Buena Vista County

October 20, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Storm Lake)– The USDA says it has confirmed a positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial turkey flock in Buena Vista county. Governor Kim Reynolds today (Friday) signed a disaster proclamation effective immediately. It runs through November 19th, 2023.

The proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal and disinfection. It also waives regulatory provisions related to commercial vehicles responding to affected sites.

Officials say the recent HPAI detections in birds do not present an immediate health concern and that it remains safe to consume poultry products.

If producers suspect signs of HPAI in their flocks, they should contact their veterinarian immediately.
