Dickinson County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan About To Be Updated

October 10, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors today (Tues.) approved a contract to update the county’s Hazard Mitigation plan. Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret says having the plan makes it possible for the county to receive grant funding for projects that help mitigate or prevent disasters…

“If you have a valid plan it allows you to apply for hazard mitigation funds. I know in one case the city of Lake Park replaced all three of their sirens through a hazard mitigation grant. Instead of having to pay probably $80,000 the city I think had to pay maybe 10 percent of that or something, or 15 percent. There’s quite a few different projects that cities and entities can look into for hazard mitigation funds assuming we have this plan in place.”

Counties are required to update their plans every five years. Dickinson county’s was last updated in 2018.
