City Of Spencer Continues To Deal With Odor

September 06, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The city of Spencer continues to deal with odor complaints originating from a company on the city’s west side. The issue has been ongoing. Officials with Symrise say they’re in the process of installing equipment to address it, but it likely won’t be until late October before it’s up and running. Meanwhile, City Attorney Don Hemphill says the city continues to receive complaints and continues to take legal action against the company in an effort to get it stopped…

“If you remember we filed a municipal infraction some weeks ago and they accepted that. They didn’t deny or contest it. They were assessed a civil penalty and paid that. Then more recently we filed a second one and also they did not contest that. The judge, in addition to imposing a $750 civil penalty and court costs, ordered that they abate the nuisance within 30 days of the order, which would be September 9th.”

Meanwhile, Hemphill says he’s filed a third municipal infraction against the company…

“Having not heard much about progress and having seen some more complaints, I filed a third municipal infraction citation last week. The appearance date, response date, for that is a couple weeks away.”

Hemphill updated the city council on the matter at their meeting Tuesday evening.
